With so many high-profile absentees, this year’s men’s US Open Championships promises to be an intriguing event. However, new World No. 1 Rafael Nadal and five-time former winner Roger Federer remain favourites to win the tournament but will not find it easy-going with a host of contenders out to take advantage of the weakened field.

So let’s take a look at the most likely contenders for the 2017 US Open title.

Of the past winners, Marin Cilic must fancy his chances. Since the withdrawal of British player Andy Murray, his path to the final has been smoothed somewhat. He has been hampered by injury this summer but is fit again and back on his favourite surface. And at 28-years-old, he should be entering his peak years.

Roger Federer has won this events on five occasions but he had a tough start here needing five sets to find a way past American youngster Frances Tiafoe in Round One. Despite that wobble, he will be expected to make it all the way to the latter stages, although a potential Round-of-16 clash with Nick Kyrgios could provide a real test. Should he pass that, Dominic Thiem is his most likely opponent in the quarter-finals.

If Federer makes it that far, he could find himself up against Rafa Nadal in the Semi-finals. The top seed got the job done in three sets against Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in their first round match on Tuesday. Potential clashes against Richard Gasquet and Tomas Berdych could provide some entertainment on the road to a quarter-final, where there are a host of potential opponents including Grigor Dimitrov.

The Spaniard bagged four clay titles this summer and has now made it back to the top of the rankings. He won his first title here in 2010 but has struggled 2013, exceeding the fourth round just once. Having said that, the absence of so many rivals and his good all round form makes him the top choice pick to bag his 16th Grand Slam title.

There has been plenty of talk about Alexander Zverev and rightly so, the 20-year-old has five title including two Masters 1000 wins to his name this season and looks ready to make an impact at Grand Slam level. He will come here full of confidence after defeating Federer in the Montreal Masters and if he can finally get to grips with the five-set format, he could be a genuine contender here. Punters should certainly consider backing him to win his quarter.

First quarter-final prediction:

Nadal vs Dimitrov (Nadal to win quarter at 4/5)
