Liverpool will head to Basel on Wednesday with their sights set on a fourth UEFA Cup crown. Meanwhile, opponents Sevilla will be aiming for their fifth title and a record-breaking third in a row.

The Reds last made it to a European final back in 2007 when they were beaten by AC Milan in the Champions League showdown in Athens. Their last Euro trophy came two years prior to that when they won the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul – also against AC Milan. On Wednesday night, the Merseyside team will be gunning for their 12th European trophy overall.

Jurgen Klopp’s men finished eighth in their domestic league and can only qualify for European competition next season by winning this event. After resting players for the final three league games, the German Coach should have a fresh and fit XI at his disposal. However, Danny Ward, Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho will all miss out.

Sevilla are aiming for their fifth Europa League/UEFA Cup crown and their third in a row. All four of their previous triumphs have come within the last 10 years. Their preparations for this final have not been ideal with just one win recorded in their last nine league games. Of those nine games, they lost seven and drew the other one.

The Andalusians finished their domestic campaign in seventh place but without a single win away from home. In all competitions, they have won just one of their last 14 games on the road.

Nicolás Pareja, Diogo Figueiras, Mariano, Federiico Fazio, Benoît Trémoulinas, José Antonio Reyes, Michael Krohn-Dehli and Marco Andreolli are all out of action for the Spanish side.

Prediction

Sevilla have been in poor form in recent weeks and will need to up their game against a Liverpool side that seems to have all the momentum in this competition. It will be a crucial week for the Spaniards who will also contest the Copa del Rey final at the weekend.

Liverpool’s hopes of returning to the Champions League are hanging on this game and Klopp will be hoping for the kind of performance that saw them dispose of Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal.
