Wimbledon – Centre Court

Roger Federer will continue his quest for an eighth Wimbledon men’s singles title when he takes on 2010 finalist Tomas Berdych on Friday afternoon.

Berdych has a 6-18 record against his opponent, so he can at least draw on a handful of winning experiences against the World No. 3. Unfortunately, seven of those 18 defeats came in the last seven matches and he has won just one of their last 17 sets they have played, suggesting that it is Federer who has learned the most from their meetings.

The one set that Berdych did win during that spell came in their last meeting in Miami back in March, with the final set going to a tiebreak.

Federer arrives here having lost just two matches since returning to action at the Australian Open back in January. He warmed up for this event with grass court title in Halle and has already won the Australian Open this year.

Berdych’s form here has come as a bit of a surprise considering his record so far this season. He is currently ranked 15 in the world and could miss out a place in the ATP World Tour Finals if he does not improve his game. However, he seems to like it here and is appearing in the semi-finals for a second consecutive year and for the third time overall. He will also arrive here fresh following the early retirement of Novak Djokovic in the last round.

Prediction

Berdych has played well here but not at a level that suggests he can dispose of the seven-time former champion.

Meanhwile, 35-year-old Federer has found a new way to play and pace himself that is proving to be very effective. Few players have looked as comfortable as he has this week and that is an ominous sign for his rival. A straightforward win should be on the cards.

Back Federer to win in three sets at 4/5 with Betfair.
