Bundesliga – 22-24 May Preview - Lets

After a successful resumption of the German Bundesliga last week, there is another round of games to look forward to this weekend. Bayern Munich picked up from where they left off in March with a routine 2-0 win at Union Berlin to maintain their four-point advantage at the top of the table. However, Borussia Dortmund were also impressive winners, beating rivals Schalke 4-0 to keep the pressure on the defending champions in the title race. Here we preview the stand-out games of this weekend.

Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt

Bayern Munich’s pursuit of an eighth Bundesliga title in a row continues as they return to the Allianz Arena for the first time since early March when they welcome Eintracht Frankfurt for the Saturday evening kick off.

The defending champions will be expected to record a sixth straight league win to stay clear of the chasing pack with just eight games to play. Munich can boast the second-best home record in the Bundesliga with nine wins from 13 games on home soil.

Visiting Frankfurt come into this game off the back of four straight defeats, including last weekend’s 3-1 home reverse against Borussia Monchengladbach. This poor form has seen them drop down to thirteenth place and just five points clear of relegation trouble. They are also now without a league win since early February.

However, when the sides met earlier in the season, Frankfurt produced a stunning display to beat 10-man Bayern 5-1 at the Commerzbank-Arena after Jerome Boateng saw red within the opening 10 minutes. The last meeting between the clubs at the Allianz Arena also saw a 5-1 score line, but this time it was Munich who inflicted the heavy defeat. In fact, this fixture seems to produce plenty of goals with 24 scored between them in their last five meetings.

Wolfsburg v Borussia Dortmund

Another win for Borussia Dortmund will see them close the gap on Bayern Munich at the top of the table for a few hours at least on Saturday afternoon, but they have a tough task as they visit the Volkswagen Arena to face sixth-placed Wolfsburg.

Dortmund returned to action with an excellent 4-0 win over fierce rivals Schalke last weekend to record a fifth straight league success. They can boast the fifth best away record in the Bundesliga and will hope to record a fourth away win in five games to maintain their chase for the title.

Wolfsburg recorded a late 2-1 win at Augsburg last week to move up to sixth, going above Freiburg and Schalke. They are now unbeaten in seven league games but don’t have the best home record after registering just four league wins from 13 games at the Volkswagen Arena.

When the sides met earlier in the season at Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, their third straight success over Wolfsburg. In fact, the hosts have failed to score a single goal against Dortmund in their last six encounters and have not beaten them since a 2-1 success in May 2015.

Third face sixth at Borussia-Park

Elsewhere, there is a huge game at Borussia-Park on Saturday afternoon as third placed Borussia Monchengladbach welcome fifth placed Bayer Leverkusen, whilst fourth placed RB Leipzig travel to struggling Mainz for the Sunday afternoon kick off.
