Premier League Preview – 19-21 June - Lets

The Premier League returned to action on Wednesday night as Aston Villa and Sheffield United played out a controversial 0-0 draw, before Manchester City beat 10-man Arsenal 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

With all teams returning to action across the weekend, and with just nine rounds of games to play, there is still lots to decide at both ends of the table.

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United

The stand out game on Friday night sees Manchester United travel to Tottenham Hotspur with the Red Devils hoping to move level on points with fourth placed Chelsea as the race for Champions League qualification resumes.

When the season was brought to a halt, United sat in fifth place following their 2-0 success against Man City at Old Trafford in early March. That win was their third in four games and helped to establish them as real contenders for a top four place.

Tottenham sit down in eighth place, just four points behind United, so Spurs know they must win this game if they are to have any realistic hope of challenging for a Champions League place too. Spurs went into lockdown on a run of three games without a win but will be boosted by the return of top scorer Harry Kane, who had been out injured for much of 2020.

When the sides met earlier in the season at Old Trafford, Man United ran out 2-1 winners thanks to two goals from Marcus Rashford, which cancelled out a Dele Alli equaliser. This will be United’s first ever visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium so it will be interesting to see how they react, but with Harry Kane back for Spurs, he is sure to pose Harry Maguire’s defence plenty of problems.

Watford v Leicester City

Watford host Leicester City at Vicarage Road on Saturday with both sides needing maximum points for very different reasons.

Watford sit just one place above the relegation zone but are involved in a very tight battle to beat the drop. Just three points separate five teams and Watford, who at one stage this season looked dead and buried, know that winning their home fixtures is their only real way of climbing clear of danger. Their last game at Vicarage Road saw them inflict Liverpool’s only league defeat of the season so that should boost their confidence when the Foxes are in town.

Leicester won their last game before lockdown, beating Aston Villa 4-0, to cement their place in third spot. Another win will see them take a further step towards qualifying for next seasons Champions League, but they have failed to win their last three away games.

Everton v Liverpool

The Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Sunday evening promises to be as competitive as ever, even without fans in attendance.

Liverpool need just two more wins to secure their first Premier League title and be crowned champions of England for the first time in 30 years. They have been super impressive throughout the season but did slip up at the end of February when losing 3-0 at Watford.

Everton are in a period of transition and will be keen to take the points to fend off any dangers of being dragged into a relegation battle. They are ten points clear of the drop but went into lockdown off the back of three games without a win which has seen them fall into the bottom half of the table.

The sides have already met twice this season, both times at Anfield. Liverpool beat the Toffees 5-2 in December in the league, before beating them 1-0 in the FA Cup four weeks later. This fixture at Goodison Park produces many draws with 0-0 a popular score line, but you have to go back to 2010 for Everton’s last Merseyside derby win, when they secured a 2-0 home win.
