The Shanghai (Rolex) masters is under way and the usual suspects top the bill for winner in 2012.  A poll held at Tennistalk.com made surprising reading after their readers voted in a poll for ‘who will win the Shanghai Masters’.

Why didn’t Milos Raonic get a mention in the poll?

[ordered_list style=”decimal”]

  1. Roger Federer 51%
  2. Novac Djockovic 27.9%
  3. Andy Murray 13.6%
  4. Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 1.2%
  5. Tomas Berdych 0.4%
  6. Other 5.8%

Raonic finished Andy Murrays recent winning streak by 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(4) at the Rakuten Open final.  Yet Andy Murray is ranked third in the poll.   Canada’s number 1 player and has a singles ATP ranking of 14.   He has won 2 titles this year, albeit, titles that the big hitters wouldn’t necessarily focus on.  Raonic has won 62% of matches this year and has started well at The Shanghai Masters by beating Marinko Matosevic.   Recently Raonic has improved his return shots but his net game needs some work.   Who will Raonic play next?

Next match and player to watch in the Shanghai Masters is Tomas Berdych. Roger Federer was knocked out of the US Open by Tomas Berdych in September 2012 so he’s won to watch.    He has a ATP ranking of 7.   Berdych plays Andreas Seppi in his first match of teh Shanghai Masters.  Seppi is ranked 26th and

Seppi lost to Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in September in  a game where he couldn’t get his server together, which was an easy match for Tsonga at the Moselle Open semifinals.  Tsonga has an ATP ranking of 6 so Seppi shouldn’t offer much resistance to Berdych especially with that serve.

Berdych vs Seppi will be played on October 10th 2012. Odds on Betfair for Seppi to lose look appealing.
