Double Breakthrough for Murray
Andy Murray’s hard-fought victory against Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s Roger’s Cup final has lifted the Scot to number two in the ATP world rankings.
The 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory also ended Murray’s eight-match losing streak against the Serbian that stretched back to the 2013 Wimbledon final.
Removing that monkey off his back and leapfrogging Roger Federer into the World No. 2 spot will give the Roger’s Cup champion a massive boost as he heads to Cincinnati for the final ATP 1000 event before the US Open begins on the last day of August.
The victory means that new World No. 3 Roger Federer will now have to win the World Tour Masters event in Cincinnati and hope that Murray fails to make the final in order to regain the number 2 spot. If the Swiss player does not win, then Murray is guaranteed to head to New York as the World No. 2. This means that there is still a possibility that Murray could end up in either side of the draw for the final Grand slam of the year.
The Big Movers
The biggest mover in the top 50 this week is French player Jeremy Chardy who has jumped 22 places and now resides in the World No. 27 spot. His progress was largely due to the points earned by reaching the semi-finals of the Roger’s Cup which ranks as an ATP 1000 event. The lift puts the 28-year-old just 2 places behind his previous career-high best ranking of 25 achieved in January 2013.
American youngster, Jack Sock has returned to number 30 in the world thanks to a quarter-final appearance at the Citi Open in Washington and a last 16 finish at the Roger’s Cup. The 22-year-old bagged his first ATP tour title this year and has enjoyed regular victories over top 20 opponents.
