With the start of the 2015 US Open tennis tournament just a week away, Andy Murray has given himself a huge boost by sealing the men’s Emirates Airline US Open Series crown. By winning the series title – which covers seven summer hard court events in the lead-up to the year’s final Grand Slam in New York – the Scot has given himself the opportunity to bag the biggest payday in tennis history.
Should he win the event in Flushing Meadows, the World No.2 will be in line for a $1m bonus to add to the $3.3m purse that is handed to the Grand Slam winner. The bonus is only paid out if the Emirates series champion also wins the US Open title.
Murray landed the title after finishing with 145 points thanks to Roger Federer’s victory over Novak Djokovic in last night’s Western & Southern Open final in Cincinnati. The Serbian ends the series in second place while the recipient of third place has yet to be decided. Murray also won the Emirates Airline US Open Series in 2010 but has yet to do the double.
In the men’s event, only Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer have triggered the bonus payout but the British player could land the biggest reward yet should he equal the feat.
The boost comes just a week after Murray defeated the World No.1 to lift the Rogers Cup trophy in Montreal, moving up to number two in the world rankings in the process.
This year’s US Open promises to be one of the most competitive in years with Murray, Djokovic and Federer all in great form. Factor in the case that the tournament has produced six different winners in the last seven years and you can see why this is one of the most hotly-anticipated Grand Slams in many years.
