Wimbledon 2015, hotly anticipated. Watch out for the wild card of wild cards. - Lets

Strawberrys and cream anyone?  Hotly anticipated by us at Let’sCompareBets.com, it’s Wimbledon 2015.  Held over two weeks starting Monday June 29th and finishing with the exciting Gentleman’s and Ladie’s finals, Neil our Wimbledon reporter will give us some match previews and reviews during the tournament.  We will release the Wimbledon draws and Wild Cards when they are released.

Things you need to know before Wimbledon 2015 starts

  • The only tennis grand slam played on grass.
  • The singles competition consists of 128 players.  64 are eliminated in the first qualifying round, 32 in the second and 16 in the third in a knock fashion.  Leaving 16 to enter the Championship to fight for the coveted Wimbledon Title.
  • Players are admitted based on international rankings.
  • 8 wild cards are admitted.

The only wild card to win the Gentlemen’s Singles Championship was Goran Ivanišević in 2001. 2015 will be the year of the wild card of wild cards: the Lawn Tennis Association (or LTA) announced that they will no longer be using ATP and WTA rankings to decide who gets through.  Instead based on professionalism, game development and recent form, which increases the chances of a wild card upsetting the big names, a bit like, Ivanišević did in 2001 (go Goran).  The other unseeded player to win the tournament was Boris Becker in 1985.  No unseeded female player has won the ladies singles, but it is relatively common in the doubles.

Last year wild card Naomi Broady caused a bit of a stir when she beat Hungarian Timea Babos, 2-6, 7-6, 6-0. Timea was ranked 70 places above Naomi who didn’t even have a coach.  The £43000 prize money to help pay for other tournaments.  The wild cards for Wimbledon 2o15 should be announced in the first two weeks of June.

Naomi Broady has a 148 singles ranking 143 for doubles, which is not enough to give her an automatic place at the tournament in 2015.

British singles players who can count on a tournament place are, Andy Murray, obviously, plus James Ward, Kyle Edmund and Liam Broady on the men’s side; Heather Watson, Laura Robson and Jo Konta on the women’s.

  • the same-sex doubles competition qualification lasts one round
  • there are no qualifying for the mixed doubles

We will post the 2015 draw as soon as it is made available.

Things to watch out for at Wimbledon 2015

  • shock first round defeats for the top players. In 2014 Federer, Sharapova, Azarenka and four other former world number ones all lost on the Wednesday alone. This reminds us of how difficult it is to predict the path of each player.
  • a wild card getting past the second round.
