Liverpool: LWWWW

Sevilla: WWDDW

After a bright start to the season, Liverpool’s momentum was dashed by an unexpected 5-0 thrashing at Manchester City last weekend, although there is no doubt that Sadio Mane’s first half sending off had a major impact on the course of that game.

Next up for the Reds is a Champions League clash against the team that defeated them in the 2016 Europa League final. Klopp’s men will be hoping to exact revenge for that loss while putting themselves on track for progression to the knockout phase.

While some may suggest that last weekend’s defeat might have dented the confidence of the Anfield side, there is a case to be made that Sevilla could suffer as the home side look to respond to that result. They have won all three of their competitive home games this term and have lost just one of their last 11 overall. This season’s results have included a 4-0 home win over Arsenal and a 4-2 victory against Hoffenheim, also on home soil.

With Phillipe Coutinho now back in contention and Mohamed Salah in good form, the home fans will be expecting a strong performance here on what should be another electric night at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Sevilla will have taken notice of Liverpool’s somewhat shaky defensive record and will be looking to exploit that on Wednesday night. The Spanish side have yet to translate their Europa League form onto the Champions League stage but they are gaining experience all the time having made it to the group stages of the elite level for the third year running.

Eduardo Berizzo’s men have lost six, drawn three and won just two of their last 11 away games in this competition and would probably settle for a point here with some much more winnable games to come. Like Liverpool, they have been a bit shaky in defence, especially in this tournament where they have recorded just three clean sheets on their travels in their last 14 attempts.

Prediction

Liverpool can be expected to score here and they should have enough to come out on top on home soil. However, they should also be expected to concede at some point so the Home Win and Both Teams to Score looks like the best bet here.
