The Champions League trophy will be on its way to Madrid on Sunday, but which team will have to make room in their trophy cabinet? All will be decided when Real Madrid and Atletico do battle in Milan on Saturday night.

The giants of Madrid will go head-to-head in the Champions League final for the second time in three years on Saturday night. Last time, it was the team in white that came out on top to claim their 10th European Cup. They will now go in search of an 11th crown while their rivals from across town aim to grab the prize for the first ever time.

The league campaign ended on a positive note for Real Madrid as they recorded 12 wins in a row to pip their rivals to second place in La Liga behind champions Barcelona. However, failure to win on Saturday would leave Zinedine Zidanes’ men trophy-less for a second straight season.

Real Madrid will be contesting their 14th top-level European final of which they have won 10 and lost four. Their last defeat came at the hands of English side Liverpool (1-0) way back in 1981.

When the teams met in the final two years ago, it took a late equalizer from Real Madrid to take the game to extra time and prevent Diego Simeone’s men from landing their first ever Champions League title. Los Colchoneros now have the perfect opportunity to ease the painful memory of that game.

In the last league meeting bewteen the two teams (back in February), it was when Atleti who prevailed by a 0-1 score-line at the Bernabeu, while the reverse game at Vicente Calderon ended in a 1-1 draw.

Prediction

Atletico Madrid had to beat Barcelona and Bayern Munich to get to this year’s final and will feel that they have unfinished business after the heartache of two years ago.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have incredible European pedigree on their side and come into this game in excellent form. However, they have only won one of their last 10 meetings against Atleti.

Another close game can be expected with extra time a big possibility.
