Atletico Madrid have yet to be beaten in all competitions this season. Next up for the Spanish side is a tough Champions League test against the also-undefeated might of Bayern Munich. The action takes place at the Estadio Vicente Calderon on Wednesday night.
Unsurprisingly, a strong defence has been the key to the Atleti’s unbeaten stretch this term. While at the other end of the pitch, the Madrid club have managed to score more than one goal on just two occasions this term. However, in those two games (against Celta de Vigo and Sporting Gijon), the goal taps were fully opened as they struck nine times.
In their last Champions League game, Diego Simeone’s team needed just a single goal to claim all three points against PSV Eindhoven. However, Wednesday night’s opponents should provide a much tougher test.
Bayern Munich remain one of top sides in Europe, and in Carlo Ancelotti, they have a Champions League veteran at the helm. The Italian coach also won the competition twice as a player and three times as a coach. He also has plenty of La Liga experience to draw upon following his successful spell in charge of Real Madrid.
The German side have won all eight of their competitive matches this season. They kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 thrashing of Russian side Rostov.
Remarkably, Ancelotti’s charges have scored 27 goals this season while conceding just one. The Bundesliga champions have lost just one of their last 10 Champions League matches and will come into this match confident of leaving with at least a point.
The home side will be without Tiago, Moya and Alessio Cerci.
Meanwhile, the visitors have a full strength squad available going into this game.
Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich Prediction
The fact that both sides have conceded just one goal in their last six matches suggests that this will be a tight game.
Based on recent form, Bayern Munich should pose the greatest threat going forward. However, Atletico are tough to break down and the morale-boosting effect of their home crowd should not be underestimated.
As a result, the draw looks like a good bet here.
