Monday Euro 2016 England vs Iceland – Preview
June 27, 2016 20:00pm – Stade de Nice, Nice
Round of 16
Recent Form (all comps)
England: DWDWW
Iceland: WDDWL
England have yet to win a European Championship finals knockout match outside of their homeland, while opponents Iceland are looking to extend their stay by winning their first ever knockout game.
The two teams have never faced each other in a competitive situation and will now battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals on Euro 2016. Both sides come into this game unbeaten, having won one and drawn two of their group stage matches.
Roy Hodgson has managed to play down his team’s tournament hopes so far but many now see England as genuine contenders for the title. If they can get their strikers firing on all cylinders they will certainly cause problems for Iceland. Once again, the England boss will have a selection headache to deal with.
Iceland are in dreamland having reached the knockout phase of a major tournament at their very first attempt. Having already exceeded expectations, the pressure will now be off the tournament minnows as they take on one of the most star-studded teams in the competition.
Match Facts
- England have had 65 shots on goal in this tournament but have only converted three
- Iceland have converted four of their 21 attempts on goal
- England have completed more than twice as many passes as their opponents
Prediction
Iceland have been a revelation at this tournament and could just frustrate the English with their resilient defending. Don’t rule out extra-time.
