Round of 16

Recent Form (all comps)

Wales: WLWLL

Northern Ireland: LWLDW

The second game of the Euro 2016 round of 16 will see British clubs Wales and Northern Ireland go head-to-head at the Parc de Princes in Paris.

Wales topped Group B ahead of England and have been rewarded with a last 16 tie against Group C’s third place team Northern Ireland. Chris Coleman’s men scored six goals on their way to the knockout stages – a total only equalled by Hungary – and conceded three.

Opponents Northern Ireland were not quite so impressive in Group C having qualified for the last 16 with just three points from a possible nine. That win came against a Ukraine side that lost all three of their games and failed to score a single goal.

With both teams having never before played at a Euro finals, there will be at least one new name on the quarter-final roster. When the teams met in a friendly match at Cardiff back in March, the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw.

Key Facts

  • Wales are facing a fellow British side for the second time in this tournament after losing 2-1 to England in Group B
  • Both teams are playing in their first ever European Championship finals
  • Of the 95 previous matches between the two teams, Wales have won 44, Northern Ireland have won 27 and 24 were drawn

Prediction

Wales may have lost to England but their second all-UK tie should prove to be a less even contest. Northern Ireland have not looked great at this tournament and only progressed thanks to a single win over a poor Ukraine side.
