Sunday Euro 2016 France vs Republic of Ireland – Preview
June 26, 2016 15:00pm – Stade de Lyon – Lyon
Round of 16
Recent Form (all comps)
France : DWWWW
Republic of Ireland: WLDLD
Tournament hosts France won Group A with relative ease and must now face third-place qualifiers Republic of Ireland in the round of 16.
After a draw against Sweden and a defeat to Belgium, Ireland looked to be heading home. But a surprise victory over a weakened Italian team on the final match day enabled the Irish to sneak a place in the last 16.
Next up for Martin O’Neill’s men are tournament hosts France who will be looking to avoid a third-straight defeat at the knockout stages of a European Championships when the teams meet in Lyon this weekend.
The teams last met at the play-off stage of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign with France prevailing over two legs. Les Bleus have won six of their previous 12 meetings to Ireland’s three, with three games finishing level.
Key Facts
- Ireland have scored just once against France in the last 35 years
- Neither side has scored more than one goal in the last five games between the two sides
- The previous five meetings have all finished with under 2.5 goals
Prediction
It hard to see any other result than a win for the hosts but Ireland could at least restrict them to just a goal or two.
