Barcelona will continue their defence of their Champions League crown against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday just three days after losing to Real Madrid in El Clasico.
Preview
Barcelona’s only previous Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid came back in 2014 when they were beaten 2-1 on aggregate. This time out, they will be looking for revenge, as they seek to retain their title.
On Saturday, the Catalan side lost for the first time in 39 matches in all competitions when they were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in La Liga.
In the Champions League, hey have lost just one of their last 16 matches and have won 10 consecutive matches on home soil.
Opponents Atletico Madrid have made it to the quarter-final stage of Europe’s elite competition for the third season in a row, and now look to have established themselves as one of European football’s most formidable teams.
In all three of their appearances at this stage, they have been drawn against Spanish opposition. In 2014, they eliminated Barcelona (2-1 agg) and progressed all the away to the final, where they lost to Real Madrid. Last season, they fell at the quarter-final stage – once again at the hand of their city rivals.
Diego Simeone’s men have yet to lose an away game in this year’s tournament, although they could only manage draws at Astana and PSV Eindhoven.
Prediction
Barcelona were well below their best on Saturday and that may be a concern for Luis Enrique. However, with the league title virtually wrapped up, the Catalans may have targetted this match as their priority.
In the last meeting between the sides, Atletico remained competitive throughout but were let down by disciplinary issue. If they can keep all their players on the pitch, they could have a great chance of taking something from this game.
The draw looks like good value at 10/3 with Betfair.
