European masters Bayern Munich are just one step away from yet another Champions League semi-final. Standing in their way are 125/1 shots Benfica who have not made it beyond this stage since 1990.

Five-time former champions Bayern Munich will be targeting their fifth-straight Champions League semi-finals when they take on two-time former winners Benfica at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.

The German side are playing in the quarter-finals for the 28th time, and if successful, will be appearing in their 18th European elite semi-final.

Only Barcelona are currently priced lower in the betting market, and it will be seen as a failure if Pep Guardiola’s side do not make it beyond this stage. Bayern have not been beaten at home in this year’s competition – however, they had to pull off a remarkable comeback to take Juventus to extra-time in the last round.

This time last year, they beat another Portuguese side (Porto) 6-1 on aggregate before falling to Barcelona at the semi-final stage.

Meanwhile, opponents Benfica have their eyes set on a first semi-final appearance since 1990. They last made it to the quarter-finals four years ago, when they were beaten by eventual winners Chelsea. The Eagles made it to the final in 1988 and 1990 but did not win either edition – however, they do have two titles to their name, having won back-to-back crowns in the 1960s.

The current Portuguese league leaders come into this game on the back of an incredible run of 19 wins in their last 20 games in all competitions, with their only blemish being the Primeira Liga defeat to Porto back in February.

Both side have injury concerns with Arjen Robben, Holger Badstuber, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez all potential absentees for the home side, while Julio Cesar, Lisandro Lopez, Nuno Santos and Luisao are all out of action for the visitors..

Prediction

Both sides are in great form but Bayern have the pedigree in this tournament, and should have enough to prevail over the two legs. With prices short, the goals market may offer the best opportunity for a value bet.

Nine of Bayern’s last 11 Champion’s League matches have ended with Over 2.5 Goals, and six of Benfica’s last seven have produced the same result.

Over 2.5 Goals at 4/7 with Betfair.
