Having reached the halfway point in the 2013/14 Premiership season, it is a good time to check out the progress of the candidates for the Premier Leagues top goal scorer. The last time we looked top goal scorers, Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge was leading the way with eight goals – just ahead of Aguero – after a blistering start to the season, and his teammate Luis Suarez was not far behind on six goals having recently returned from his ban.

Since then, Sturridge has added just one more goal to his tally but has been missing through injury while Suarez has scored an incredible 14 more goals to put his total on 20 for the season. Aguero has also missed some games through injury but has still managed an impressive total of 13, but the big surprise is his team mate Yaya Toure who is in joint third place with Loic Remy on 10 goals.

Last year’s top scorer Robin Van Persie is lagging well behind on just seven goals but has been affected by injury – as well as Manchester United’s dip in form under new boss David Moyes. Wayne Rooney has fared slightly better and has bagged nine goals for the Red Devils so far but remains well behind the Uruguayan pace-setter.

The only player with a realistic chance of closing the gap on Suarez is Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, but it would take an amazing run of form from the Argentinean or an injury to the Liverpool player to make this a plausible prospect.

So, who will be the 2013/14 top goal scorer? Suarez seems a dead cert at this stage and you will not get any favours from the bookmakers if you want to back the Kop favourite. If you believe that Aguero can close the gap on Suarez then you can currently get 10-1 on the City man to bridge the seven goal deficit.

With Sturridge due back from injury next week on a total of nine goals, you might fancy the other half of Liverpool’s deadly SAS partnership to catch Aguero for second place, and he can backed each way at 200-1 with Bet365 who will pay 1/4 odds for second place. But be quick, as this price may not be around for long.
