Sun 10 Nov 2013 12:00 – Spurs v Newcastle (White Hart Lane)

Referee: Chris Foy

Spurs entertain Newcastle at White Hart Lane this weekend and will be hoping to continue their decent home form. The only blip on their home record is the awful performance against West Ham that resulted in a 3-0 defeat but despite that they still sit comfortably in fourth place. Newcastle shocked everyone last week when they disposed of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea with a convincing 2-0 victory, but the result also highlighted the unpredictability of Alan Pardew’s team. Kyle Naughton is set to return to the Spurs squad this weekend while Newcastle are hoping to that Coloccini will be fit  following his recent groin injury.Cheick Tiote is also a slight doubt for the Geordies after suffering a muscle strain but is expected to be fit in time.

Goal scoring has been a slight issue for Tottenham this season and their big-money signing, Roberto Soldado, seems to be taking time to adjust to the League and also to the tactics of Andre Villas-Boas. They have only managed an average of one goal a game at home and this is a low figure for a top four team. They concede an average of 0.8 goals at home and it is within these tight margins that they seem to be operating in this season. Newcastle have a fairly good goal scoring record on the road with an average of 1.4 but have conceded an average of 2.2 and have yet to keep a clean sheet. All of the Toon’s away games have had over 2.5 goals compared to just 20 % of Spur’s home games.

Newcastle do not win many corners away from home and currently average just 2 per game and both teams only concede an average of about 4 against. Tottenham can be expected to win about 6 corners and there is a very high possibility that there will be fewer than 10.5 corners. Tottenham have yet to score more than 2 goals in a home this season but Newcastle do have a habit of conceding on their travels. Tottenham seem to be able to grind out results this season and Newcastle will find it very difficult to win here unless Spurs suffer the kind of collapse that they did against West Ham, It will be a close game and but the hosts can be expected to prevail by a single goal.

Match prediction: Spurs 2-1 Newcastle
